Some of my memories of student days are still vivid; I remember that one of the greatest pleasures in student life was finding a good textbook that made a difficult subject accessible...

While teaching the Undergraduate and Postgraduate classes in the field of Mechanical Engineering, I found that the students are often at a loss when faced with the task of selection of good Textbooks for a given subject. I believe that, in order to grasp the subject with full appreciation, one requires the aid of a good textbook. Normally, students select the textbooks based on the feed back they get from their senior students. Unfortunately, more often the one they suggest may not be the best one available in that particular field. They tend to choose books which they feel that will help them in scoring good marks in the examinations. It's fine. But what about the knowledge one has acquired in the subject while undergoing the course? Often the answer is not encouraging. A teacher's role is often limited to motivating the students and guide them in learning the subject. Thus, the selection of good textbooks is a crucial factor in the learning process.

Below I give a list of some of the best books (strictly according to my personal preference - better books may be available which I have not come across) in the discipline of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Mathematics. Because my exposure is limited to a certain field of Mechanical Engg., I am unable to provide an exhaustive list in the entire gamut of the discipline.

These books are selected based on certain criteria; it must be written in a coherent fashion, follows a lucid style, emphasis on the basic concepts, should contain good number of solved and exercise problems, and above all the reading must turn out to be pleasurable exercise.
