Calicut - My City
Kalaripayattu - The Martial Arts from Malabar Calicut or Kozhikode, as it is known locally, is a beutiful coastal city in the north part of Kerala, the so called God's own country in India. The place is bestowed with lush green countryside, serene beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, and hills. It has a unique culture coupled with a warm and friendly ambience, that makes Calicut a wonderful city. Ruled by the Zamorin dynasty in the past, Calicut found a place in World History with the discovery of sea route to India in 1498 by the Portuguese navigator Vasco Da Gama. Some facts about Calicut
  • The City is about 200 km north of Cochin and 230 km south of Mangalore. It is sandwiched between Arabian sea and the Western Ghats (Sahyadri hills). The neighboring districts are Kannur on north, Malappuram on south, and Wayanad on east.
  • Climate: Sultry summers, pleasant winters and long rainy season from June to October.
  • The culture, cuisine and life in general is a medley of all the major religious faiths - the Hindus, Muslims, and Christians.
  • The commercial hub of northern Kerala, known for its export of exotic spices.
  • Mananchira, the big tank, is in the heart of the city which sites important institutions like the Town Hall and the Public Library. The large tank and the beautiful park adjacent to it are well known hall-marks of the city.
  • Kalari payattu, the ancient martial arts of Kerala is believed to be originated from Northern parts of Malabar, now in Calicut district.
  • Kallai, just 2 km south of Calicut city, was once the center of world's second largest timber trade. Today, though business does take place, it is passing through difficult a phase and Kallai is just a shadow of its past.
  • Beypore, the port town of Calicut is about 10 km from the city, was known for building huge pathemaris (catamaran) which was very popular among trading Arabs. Beypore is still famous for its country crafts called ‘Uru’ built by the traditional shipbuilders known as khalasis.
  • The unexplored backwaters of Calicut hold great promises of enchanting holiday options. Elathur, the Canolly Canal and the Kallai river are favorite haunts for boating. Kadalundi, with its beautiful bird sanctuary is a charming site. Korapuzha, the venue of the Korapuzha Jalotsavam is fast becoming a popular water sport destination.
  • Calicut Airport, at Karipur, is 23 km south of the city. It operates Indian Airlines flights to Mumbai, Chennai and Sharjah in the Middle East.
  • Peace loving people-known for their communal harmony. One of the few cities in India, where the demolition of Babri masjid did not cause any repercussion.rivers and coconut palms
